Mountain biking in Lesotho

Don’t forget to bring your mountain bike on a visit to Semonkong Lodge as we are located on the doorstep of some of the best mountain biking trails in Lesotho, and indeed southern Africa. With our soaring peaks measuring some 3 000m, steep valleys, untouched wilderness and river crossings, Semonkong offers countless blood-pumping biking adventures. From here, MTB riders can embark on a variety of unmarked trails that cater to different skill levels, regardless of whether you’re starting out as a mountain biker or if you’re already an offroad adrenaline junkie. The high-altitude terrain varies from divisional gravel roads that climb out of the valley (2 200m) in all directions from the lodge to horse trails and contour tracks that offer tougher, more technical rides.

For those wanting a leisurely ride, the short and easy Maletsunyane Falls route offers panoramic views of Africa’s second highest single-drop waterfall, where you can rest and look for the cliff-dwelling colony of Bearded Vultures among 250-odd other bird species. With enough pedal power, you can ride out for a six-hour excursion. It’ll have you back in time for a scrumptious lunch at our restaurant with an ice-cold Maluti beer (or two) on our riverfront porch.

As the mountain air is cool year-round, on longer rides it’s best to be prepared for fast-changing weather conditions. Be sure to take enough water, snacks, a warm windbreaker, equipment and repair kits. The reception at Semonkong Lodge offers free basic maps of the area. While there are no ‘formal’ mountain bike trails, bikers can navigate horse paths that are also used for hiking. We can also organise a knowledgeable local guide to accompany you on horseback as you make your way through traditional villages and meet blanket-wearing Basotho horsemen along the way. Should you prefer, we also offer horse-powered tours.
